Who we are
DebtPivot is an independent comparison and education site for people in the United States dealing with credit card, medical and other unsecured debt. It's run by a small team in Palm Desert, California, in the Coachella Valley.
What we do
- Explain the six main ways out of unsecured debt (settlement, consolidation loans, nonprofit credit counseling, balance transfers, do-it-yourself payoff and bankruptcy) with typical fees, timelines and trade-offs.
- Offer free calculators and a budget builder that run in your browser.
- Publish plain-English guides for urgent situations, like being sued or dealing with collectors, and point you to free government and nonprofit help.
- If you take our free assessment, email you a suggested next step and, only if you ask, connect you with a partner.
What we don't do
- We're not a lender, a debt settlement company, a credit counseling agency or a law firm.
- We don't negotiate with your creditors, hold your money or take payments toward your debts.
- We never charge you anything.
- We don't give individual legal, tax or financial advice. For that, talk to a licensed professional, legal aid office or nonprofit counselor.
How we make money
We may earn a referral fee when someone chooses to be connected with a partner, such as a settlement company, lender or counseling agency, through our assessment. That fee never adds to your cost. The details are on our affiliate disclosure page.
Our editorial policy
- Free options always appear. Nonprofit counseling, do-it-yourself payoff and free government programs are shown alongside paid options, even though they don't pay us.
- Money doesn't buy placement. Partners can't pay to change what we say about an option or to be recommended where they don't fit.
- We cite our numbers. National figures come from public sources like the Federal Reserve, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the CFPB and the FTC. Fee and savings ranges for programs like settlement are industry-reported and vary by company, and we say so.
- We date our reviews. Each guide shows when it was last reviewed. Debt rules, especially for federal student loans, change often.
- Examples are labeled. Any example scenario on this site is illustrative, not a real customer, and is marked that way.
